Aspect Ratio

A Word about Aspect Ratio
WHEN you trim, crop and save your photos be aware that the ratio of the width to height on a monitor is different to that of a printer. If you don’t maintain the correct ratio for the printer you are likely to lose some parts of the picture at the sides. Or you may end up with extra large white borders at the top and bottom.

For instance a standard 10cm by 15cm (4” x 6”) print has a ratio of 3:2. Many digital camera sensors have the same ratio as a monitor, 3:4. So some cropping may occur when printed on the 3:2 standard paper. With Ted’s Printing Kiosk you can select that 3:4 ratio and it will be printed without any loss of image. Some cameras allow you to set a ratio to the 3:2 size and you won’t lose any part of the picture when it is printed on standard sizes.

Remember when you make a crop, to set the constrain options to the standard size that you want to print.

Negative 3:2 Ratio

Digital SLR 3:2 Ratio

Compact Digital 4:3 Ratio

A standard 10cm x 15cm print has a 3:2 ratio. Therefore cropping occurs on images from a compact digital camera.
